The CIF-Southern Section released its preseason prep basketball polls Tuesday and if this is any indication, the 2012-13 season appears to be a promising one for the Santa Clarita Valley boys teams, as seven teams were ranked.

On the girls side, only one school was ranked.

Four Foothill League teams had successful runs in tournaments last week and are thus considered some of the top teams in their divisions.

West Ranch (4-1), which finished second in Santa Monica High’s “The Tournament” last week is ranked third in Division IA.

In the tournament, the Wildcats knocked off highly rated Alemany and Chaminade.

Valencia is quietly 7-1 thus far and ranked seventh in the division.

Canyon (7-1) won its own Canyon Classic last week and is the No. 5 team in Division IIAA.

The runner-up in that tournament, Saugus (3-1), is No. 12 in Division IIA.

Hart (3-0), which won the Crescenta Valley Tournament, is the No. 5 team in Division IIIAAA.

Private schools Trinity (5-1, No. 4 in Division VI) and Santa Clarita Christian (3-3, No. 9 in Division VA) are also ranked.

Canyon is the only ranked team on the girls side at No. 5 in Division IIAA.

The Cowboys (7-1) won the Buena Tournament last week.

Valencia is 4-0, having won its own tournament — the High-Five Classic — and West Ranch (4-4) should be considered a league title contender, but neither were ranked.
