Westfield was recently recognized for its design and architecture of the 250,000-square-foot Patios shopping center expansion to the Westfield Valencia Town Center.

The International Council of Shopping Centers, which pays tribute to leading design trends of retail projects, gave Westfield its Gold award for the outdoor patio and shopping center addition to the mall. The Gold award is the highest honor a retail project can receive for development and design.

“There is a lot of pride and excitement here at Westfield,” said Keith Kaplan, vice president of development for Valencia Town Center. “We have always known that the Patios design was unique and beautifully executed.”

Receiving the honor validated the distinctive design among other retail projects, Kaplan said.

News of the award was made public on Monday by the Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corp., who learned of the honor from Kaplan who represents Westfield on the EDC’s board of directors.

Earning the top award automatically places Westfield in the running for a global award at the International Council of Shopping Centers annual conference in Las Vegas in May 2013.

“We would be remiss not to share the success of this award with the partners that made the project happen including LNR and the city of Santa Clarita,” Kaplan said. “Both groups have been instrumental in helping us achieve our visions and provide Santa Clarita with a world-class retail center.”

Westfield broke ground on the expansion in January 2008. Despite economic challenges presented by the recession, the Patios opened to shoppers in November 2010.

The Valencia Town center now has 1.1 million square feet of space for retailers, including restaurants. The mall development and management company opened 25 new retail stores in 2012, bringing the total to 193 stores.

“We are thrilled for the Westfield team and share in the sentiments of ICSC,” said Jason Crawford, marketing and economic development manager for the city of Santa Clarita.

The Patios offers a beautiful shopping atmosphere for residents and visitors, and has been very successful in building Santa Clarita’s presence as a premier shopping destination, Crawford said.
