Sandy Fisher, right, turns the Santa Clarita Artists' Association president's gavel over to incoming 2009 president Laurie Morgan.

After two years as president of the Santa Clarita Artists' Association Sandy Fisher of Saugus recently passed the gavel of leadership to Laurie Morgan.

Fisher, a member of the Artists' Association executive board for four years, will now pursue fundraising opportunities and marketing strategies for the association.

"I am deeply passionate about the positive impact of the visual arts on society and our community and I will continue to be an active advocate," Fisher said.

Fisher received an engraved plaque from the Artists' Association and high praise from Morgan, the incoming president.

"She gave over 500 percent to the association and I don't think anyone worked as hard as Sandy did during her term on the Board," Morgan said.

Morgan was born and raised in Los Angeles and studied music and theater arts at San Diego State University. After college she began a career as a band singer touring the U.S. in rock, country and disco groups including a four-month solo engagement in Japan. After more than 10 years of performing, she took time off for marriage and to raise three sons. Currently she works as an actress in commercials, film, television and theater in the Los Angeles area and is also a commercial talent agent.

"Painting is my passion and my occupation is acting. Many of my pieces have windows, arches and pathways," said Morgan. "They represent to me adventure, surprise and spirituality. I truly love to perform and to create art - but whether I'm singing, acting or creating a painting, it is how I'm able to touch people's lives. With my arts I have been blessed to be able to turn strangers into friends, and I am sincerely grateful for this gift."

Morgan said she plans to continue the work of expanding partnerships throughout the Santa Clarita Valley begun by the outgoing board.

"My goals are to continue the impressive hard work done by the previous board, form a greater partnership with the city of Santa Clarita, have our members artwork exhibited even more throughout the valley, and to hold free art workshops with the help of grants and local sponsorship funding," she said.

Also installed during the December meeting were the 2009 executive board members: Vice President Peggy Patti, Treasurer Shirley Checkos, Secretary Jane Dietz and Diane Bruckner, Internet transactions treasurer.

The Artists' Association monthly meetings are held in the Westfield Valencia Town Center Community Room, between JC Penny and the food court. Non-members are also welcomed and may attend their first meeting for free.
