A large cloud of what appeared to be smoke - suspected of being the result of a brush fire - turned out to be a dust cloud from a “huge rock slide,” a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

At 8:44 a.m. Thursday, firefighters and department helicopter pilots were dispatched to the area of Soledad Canyon and Agua Dulce Canyon for report of a brush fire, said Fire Department Supervisor Cheryl Sims.

“The information came from someone in one of our engine companies,” she said. “He thought he had a brush fire but when he got up close it turned out to be a huge rock slide.”

Emergency crews scrambled to Agua Dulce as a result of the call were immediately called back, she said.
