Residents of the Santa Clarita Valley are invited to join in a worldwide candle-lighting event to honor the memories of deceased children.

The Santa Clarita Valley chapter of The Compassionate Friends will host the 16th annual event at 6:30 p.m. Sunday in Canyon Country Park.

“This is our gift to the bereavement community,” said TCF/USA Executive Director Patricia Loder. “The holiday season is an extremely difficult time of the year for families grieving the death of a child.”

The special candle-lighting service has the theme “... that their light may always shine.” It is held in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Nearly 20 countries around the world will also join.

Last year 550 services were submitted and listed on The Compassionate Friends website, www.compassionatefriends.org. The website will offer a Remembrance Book on Sunday that will be open for 24 hours to receive tributes from family members and other caring individuals.

“Everyone is invited to this moving event, whether or not they have suffered the personal loss of a child,” said chapter co-leader Alice Renolds. “This is the 12th year that the Santa Clarita Valley has participated in the candle lighting.”

Renolds lost two sons, Tim and Danny Renolds, in a deadly Feb. 17, 2000, car crash in Canyon Country.

Renolds said The Compassionate Friends group supports parents of children who die at any age, but also siblings and grandparents who have lost grandchildren.

The Compassionate Friends annual Worldwide Candle Lighting is an event believed to be the largest mass candle lighting in the world.

In addition to the candle-lighting, the event will feature live performers, music, readings and poems.
Candles are lit at 7 p.m. in each time zone.
