INDIO, Calif. (AP) — Hundreds of people looking for work have shown up at a Southern California job fair in hopes of landing construction jobs in Canada.

Up to 40,000 jobs are available in British Columbia because of a construction boom.

The Riverside County Economic Development Agency office of foreign trade and the Canada California Business Council hosted Tuesday's job fair in Indio, a desert city 130 miles east of Los Angeles.

The Desert Sun of Palm Springs says more than 500 job seekers from as far away as Arizona, Nevada and Texas had lined up for the job fair early Tuesday.

Seven Canadian employers were at the job fair, but 2,000 companies will be recruiting from the applicant pool.

The county economic development agency says at least 100 job seekers were close to getting job offers.
