Girl Scout Troop 5282 gathers in front of the Valencia Chick-Fil-A to honor veterans during a recent "Thank a Veteran" event and fundraiser. A volunteer is dressed as a 1776 soldier.

Girl Scout Troop 5282 honored veterans Nov. 12 at a “Thank a Veteran” event and fundraiser at the Valencia Chick-Fil-A.

Thanks to generous donations and support from local, regional, and national organizations and private citizens, the troop had a great start to its Quest Take Action Project, said Troop Leader Jenelle Hamilton.

During the project, Hamilton said, the troop learned about and developed leadership skills while conducting a military-related community service project.

The “Thank a Veteran” event featured a patriotic flag ceremony under the protection of a volunteer dressed as a 1776 soldier and a 200-year-old cannon.

The participants then enjoyed a chicken dinner. Other activities included holiday card-making for the troops and the trading of SWAPS amongst the Girl Scouts in attendance.

Girl Scout Troop 5282 honored veterans during the event by offering attending veterans $5 gift cards to subsidize their dinners.

The Girl Scouts also handed out hand-made thank-you cards to veterans.

Hamilton said the troop would like to thank supporters, including the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles, Chick-Fil-A, John McAdam of Valencia Re/Max, Italian American Police Officer Association of Southern California, Ladies Auxiliary Military Order of the Purple Heart, Virginia Stewart of Once Upon an Opera and the Bob Hope USO.

Hamilton said Girl Scout Troop 5282 completed 40 hours of community service last school year.

The troop has also completed 26 hours of community service since August.

Four more projects are planned for this year.
