Death of The Signal’s dash

Paper’s website changes its name and address today

Effective today, The Signal’s website address has changed to www.signalscv.com.

But for readers who have the old address — with the dastardly dash placed between the words “the” and “signal” — memorized or bookmarked on their computers and mobile devices, users will be seamlessly routed to the new site.

The hyphen also disappeared from The Signal e-mail addresses of staff today. However, messages sent to the old email addresses will also be automatically routed to the new address. The email address for Signal staff is now “firstinitial-lastname@signalscv.com.” (Example: JDoe@signalscv.com)

“We got a lot of input from the community that they didn’t like the dash,” said Vince Johnson, chief multimedia officer with The Signal.

The change makes the address more user-friendly, Johnson said.

It’s less difficult to explain to readers and customers and easier for those readers and customers to understand.

The change is also a strategic one for the long-term growth of the website and The Signal’s multimedia efforts, Johnson said.

“Including SCV in the newspaper’s website address also improves landing on our site,” he said. “It creates a geographic link.”

But mainly the change just makes it easier for everyone to explain and to use, Johnson said.

These changes come as traffic on The Signal’s website continues to increase, said Publisher Randy Morton.

According to Google Analytics, the site currently has 1.2 million page views per month. It also has more than 200,000 unique visitors per month, an increase of more than 30 percent over last year.

“Clearly, people believe our website is the best source of information for the Santa Clarita Valley, and it’s growing fast,” Morton said.

“We want signalscv.com and related mobile components to be simple, effective and fun. That will continue to be our focus going forward.”
