County supervisors have approved water rate hikes for residents of Val Verde and Acton in the Santa Clarita Valley, as well as for Malibu and the Marina del Rey.

The Board of Supervisors authorized the Department of Public Works to increase rates for five years in the water districts that serve those areas.

The funds will be used for operation and maintenance costs, capital improvements, to build a 90-day cash reserve in the general funds and to create a cash reserve.

Rate increases take effect Jan. 1 and are expected to be 3.4 percent for Val Verde residents and 6.8 percent for those living in Acton. That will translate into an average bi-monthly increase to customers’ bills of $5.43 and $10.40, respectively.

Public comment meetings on the increases were held in Val Verde Sept. 13 and 19 and in Acton on Oct. 15.

The last general rate increases were in 2007.
