VENTURA, Calif. (AP) — A Ventura County supervisor is accusing the county's top elections official of violating campaign finance law.
In a complaint filed with the Campaign Finance Ethics Commission, Supervisor Steve Bennett says his re-election bid was hindered by Clerk-Recorder Mark Lunn. Bennet says Lunn failed to inform him of the activities of an outside interest group until late in the race.
Bennett tells the Ventura County Star (http://bit.ly/WpeqoA ) that he believes if Lunn had acted more quickly, his campaign might have been better able to counteract a negative mail barrage that labeled him a hypocrite. The effort was sponsored by Citizens for a Better Ventura County.
Lunn said it would be inappropriate to comment on the complaint because the matter is pending.
Bennett won his fourth term Nov. 6 in a close race against Bob Roper.
