The driver of an SUV found slammed into a tree on Orchard Village Road in Valencia early Friday has been handed a traffic citation — a misdemeanor hit-and-run — by local traffic investigators, a sheriff’s deputy said.

Shane Haserjian, 42, of Encino, was cited for leaving the scene of a traffic collision causing property damage and ordered to appear in court Jan. 15, said Deputy Josh Dubin of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

A Ford Explorer crashed into a tree about 2:30 a.m. Friday south of Dalby Drive.

The section of the California Vehicle Code for which he was cited states: “The driver of any vehicle involved in an accident resulting only in damage to any property, including vehicles, shall immediately stop the vehicle at the nearest location that will not impede traffic or otherwise jeopardize the safety of other motorists.”

The man who had been driving the vehicle was located later Friday, Lt. Bill Weiss said at the time of the crash.

Guns found inside the SUV in a lockbox were left behind after the crash, but the guns were determined to be licensed and legal, Weiss said.

“Apparently, he waited at the scene a number of minutes and nobody arrived,” Dubin said Monday.

The driver then walked to the home of his girlfriend nearby and phoned the Sheriff’s Station, he said.

“There was no problem with the guns,” Dubin said. “He had them unloaded and kept separate from the ammunition.”
