Paul Falcone: Republican accusations ring false

Michael Reagan’s syndicated article “GOP turns sure victory into defeat” (Nov. 8) misses the mark on so many fronts.

At the time of his father’s presidency, all was not so well on Capitol Hill, especially in Reagan’s second term with the Iran-Contra scandal.

Barack Obama is not “an incompetent and dangerous incumbent” by any stretch of the imagination. That type of wholesale generalization and hyperbole is exactly what makes the current “dream team” of Republican leaders so out of sync with the majority of Americans.

Stoking the flames of fear, demonstrating a sense of exclusiveness and arrogance, and exhibiting self-righteousness bordering on intolerance continues to wear away at the GOP.

If there have been any political players who could rightfully be labeled as incompetent and dangerous in recent memory, those unfortunate labels would more correctly fit George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and most of all, Karl Rove.

I believe that what makes America great is not just smaller government, fewer taxes and a sense of individual responsibility where each person is responsible for himself, but that every individual accepts responsibility for the greater good and survival of all.

The evolution of a society is measured by how well it treats the least among its members, and like Barack Obama’s policies or not, the spirit of his administration encompasses these very Christian and humanistic values.
