Hart district officials said Friday they canceled the annual Teacher Recruitment Fair due to California's ongoing budget crisis.

This year's fair was originally scheduled for March 14.

"The Hart District has decided to cancel the recruitment fair for this year and see what the situation looks like next year," said Rochelle Neal, assistant superintendent of human resources for the William S. Hart Union High School District.

The four local elementary districts previously indicated they would not be participating, although a few were considering a presence simply to support local education.

The fair, held for the past seven years, typically drew more than 1,000 teachers interested in K-12 teaching positions at local schools.

The cancellation comes as the Hart district alone considers a $29.5 million in budget cuts over the next two and a half years as enrollment continues to grow.

In 2008, the district hired close to 40 new teachers to replace teachers who were retiring or leaving the district and to accommodate a modest growth in enrollment.
