Richard Myers: Voting should not be difficult

The front page headline of the election day Signal read “Now, voters get to speak,” but it should have read, “Now, voters get to speak — slowly!”

The fact that in some states voters had to wait in line for hours is outrageous. What happened in those states?

Did the government officials wake up on Nov. 5 and say to themselves, “Oh, my gosh, the vote is tomorrow! We better set up some voting places!”

The United States is not an emerging nation that just won the right for its citizens to vote. We’ve been doing it for years, haven’t we? Where have the officials of those states been? Did they miss it?

For heaven’s sake, no one should have to wait more than a few minutes to vote. Yes, it can be done everywhere — even in those states requiring voter identification.

It just takes spending the money to have the right number of polling places and personnel and equipment.

Where does the money come from? Here’s one idea: How about a place for taxpayers to check when they file their taxes that would read something like this: “Would you like to donate $2 toward voting facilities? Yes__ No__.”

In any case, something needs to be done. It should not be a hardship for anyone in this country to vote.
