Tom Cole, the Hart district’s chief operations officer, has been hired as Santa Clarita’s new community development director, officials announced Tuesday.

Cole, who also has a background with Newhall Land Development Inc., will leave his current position with the William S. Hart Union High School District to assume his new role with the city in mid-December. He succeeds Paul Brotzman, who retired earlier this year.

“I believe Tom will be a great addition to our management team,” Assistant City Manager Ken Striplin said in a release. “I am looking forward to working with him to continue building strong community relationships and in moving forward with a range of projects benefiting our city and our residents.”

Cole joined the Hart district after serving as senior project manager for Newhall Land. He was hired by the Hart district in July 2010.

Cole graduated from California State University, Fullerton, with a bachelor’s degree in geography with an emphasis in urban planning. He also serves as a board member with the Santa Clarita Valley Rotary Club and YMCA.

In the field of development, Cole worked at JT Wimsatt Contracting Company, Highland Development Company, LNR Property and Newhall Land.

The Hart district will begin a search for Cole’s replacement immediately, according to district spokeswoman Gail Pinsker.

“In the two-plus years that Tom has been a part of the Hart district team, he has done an outstanding job,” said district Superintendent Rob Challinor in a release. “Tom has been an asset to the district; his knowledge, expertise and integrity will be missed.”
