"I am very pleased that President Bush has acted to commute the sentences of U.S. border agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean. I joined a chorus of Republicans and Democrats in asking President Bush to revisit this issue in a recent letter as I believed that the sentence they received was much too harsh.
"The men and women who work to protect our borders deserve our praise, not our indignation. They provide a great service by working, daily, to protect our national security and by strengthening the integrity of our borders.
"I applaud President Bush for his actions and look forward to seeing border agents Ramos and Compean reunited with their families."
