Vietnam Veteran Robert Scobie with the 1st Airborne and served in Vietnam 1966-1967, salutes during the Pledge of Allegiance during the Veterans Day Ceremony at Veterans Memorial Plaza, 2011.

The city of Santa Clarita will hold its annual Veterans Day ceremony Sunday at 11 a.m. in Veterans Historical Plaza in Newhall.

The event will begin with a reading of names of American servicemen and women who are prisoners of war or missing in action and will also include performances from local musicians.

Some speakers at the event will include members of the Santa Clarita City Council and local veterans. Local resident and veteran Duane Harte will serve as master of ceremonies for the event.

Harte served in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1990 and was stationed mostly around the Pacific Ocean. He was also the master of ceremonies for last year’s event.

“I must admit I’m rather flattered to be asked to do this again,” Harte said, laughing.

The event will also include a “changing of the flags” at Veterans Historical Plaza. This means the old flags will be taken down and replaced with new ones.

The old flags are then ceremonially retired, Harte said.

Harte estimated around 600 to 700 people attended the event last year and said he is hoping for an even larger crowd on Sunday.

“We need to show our support to those who are still fighting for our freedoms,” Harte said. “And we need to let our children know why we are doing this.”
