Republicans: Foes of education?

To the Editor:

Once again we see that the Republican Party does love all children, as long as they are the unborn kind, of course. How else can you explain their now-infamous defense of the "sloophole" on yachts bought out of state? The Republican Party would rather the Hart School District cut $10.4 million from our childrens' education than upset their wealthy constituency.

These kids of deep cuts in California's budget will become all too common because of the Republican Party's intransigence in working with the majority of Californians. Now I can understand why folks like Cameron Smyth and George Runner behave the way they do - they answer to a higher, corporate master.
What I don't understand is why the people of this city are so overwhelmingly Republican.

Ask virtually any parent in this valley why they live here, and inevitably the first or second reason they provide is the quality of the schools. Well, folks, $10.4 million cut from your schools is going to significantly impact the quality of education we offer. I mean, if you think they are going to furlough a couple of janitors and that's all, you are sorely mistaken.

The right-wing takeover of the Republican Party over the last half-century has left us with a political organization bereft of any responsible ideas. Bigotry and hatred have replaced sound policy. If it were my children being robbed by the Republicans, I'd sure be fighting mad right now. Then again, I support responsible government.
