Santa Clarita Christian defeated Upland Christian Academy of Rancho Cucamonga 3-2 on Thursday at Santa Clarita Christian School in the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division VAA playoffs

The Cardinals won by scores of 25-18, 19-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-10.

“This was one of the toughest matches we’ve played, but we played really well,” said SCCS head coach Darcy Brown.

SCCS now plays in the Division VAA quarterfinals against the winner of Thursday’s Coastal Christian-ABGU match.

Cardinals senior Lette Blake had 11 kills, nine digs and 17 assists, while freshman Kylie Brown had 10 kills, seven digs and 14 assists with two aces.

Another senior, Christina Keoshian had 10 kills, nine digs, six aces, and 10 blocks.

“The girls had a resolve within them to fight for it and not let down,” Brown said of the final moments of the match, where the winning point was scored by Upland Christian Academy serving into the net. “At that moment all emotion was released. It had been a long fight to the end.”

Keoshian and Blake were huge in taking the lead against Upland.

Brown was also integral in the success of the match, Brown added.

“This was the most fast-paced games we played,” Brown said. “The ball did not hit the ground and the girls were all over the floor just to get the ball.” The Cardinals sit at 10-7 overall. Based off of a coin flip, they will be at home on Saturday if AGBU won, or on the road if Coastal Christian won.
