CIF volleyball playoffs: Hart gets past dip

Indians slowed only once in first-round win

Hart came out on top in a tight fourth game to win its first round CIF-Southern Section Division IA match over Moorpark 25-13, 23-25, 25-9, 24-20 at Hart High School on Tuesday night.

After Hart (19-9) came out strong to take a commanding 25-13 game-one victory, Moorpark (17-12) took advantage of the Indians’ mistakes in game two to turn things around and tie up the match.

“The second game pretty much is exactly what our team is,” said Hart head coach Mary Keen. “We always have a dip in game two.”

Fortunately for Hart, that dip didn’t last long.

The Indians used a dominant 15-5 run to turn a 5-4 third game into a 25-9 victory when Amy King slammed home the winning kill to put Hart back up by one game.

King finished with seven kills. Erin Indermill led with 32 assists and added four aces. Katie Baker led with 21 digs. Chase Tengberg had 12 kills, while Kathryn Cambra added seven kills and Sydney Hamilton had six aces.

“This is a big deal to our players,” Keen said. “They have their eyes set on making a statement for this program.”

The fourth game more closely resembled game two, with the Musketeers pulling within a point five times from 12-11 to 18-17.

But four times during that stretch, Moorpark committed service errors to add to Hart’s lead.

“That definitely hurts your chance of winning. That’s been the story of our year,” said Moorpark head coach Brendan Hanson. “It came back to bite us. In CIF, every team can play. Unforced errors, especially service errors, are tough to combat.”

For Moorpark, Brooke Rudebusch led with 27 assists and 10 digs, while Mariah Bell led with 18 kills and 12 digs.

The Indians now turn their attention to a second-round match that will take place Thursday either on the road against Citrus Belt League No. 3 Cajon High School, or against Century League No. 1 El Dorado, with the host being determined by a coin flip.
