Defending individual state champion and College of the Canyons sophomore Kris Grimes won the California Community College Athletic Association Women’s Golf Southern Regional Championship on Monday at San Luis Rey Downs Resort & Country Club in Bonsall.

She finished with a two-day score of 150 with rounds of 71 and 79 on the par-72 course. Grimes beat second-place Kate Cho, of Irvine Valley College, by two strokes.

“Wining this is pretty intense because last year I was pretty low on the individual standings and this year I just told myself I could handle the pressure of playing with these amazing women,” the sophomore said after becoming just the second player in COC history to win a SoCal golf championship.

The only other Cougar to do it was Jenny Lee in 2007.

As a freshman, Grimes won an individual CCCAA Women’s state title. She can try to repeat that accomplishment next week.
