One of two men identified as street racers in a Sand Canyon crash that claimed the life of a 19-year-old Canyon Country man early this year posted bail Tuesday and was released from custody.

Thomas Joseph Vensko, 20, of Canyon Country, appeared in San Fernando Superior Court and posted $100,000 bail to be released from custody, a spokeswoman said.

Colt Sean Doherty, 19, also of Canyon Country and also charged in the same offense, remains in custody.

Doherty and Vensko were arrested in August on suspicion of vehicular homicide in the death of Dakota Demott, 19.

Shortly after that, the District Attorney’s office filed second-degree murder charges in the case.

Doherty, who was seriously injured in the collision, was behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang in which Demott was riding when his vehicle slammed into an oak tree on Sand Canyon Road in Canyon Country.

Investigators said Doherty and Vensko were racing on the winding canyon road.

Both Doherty and Vensko were told to return to court next month for arraignment on the charges and to enter a plea.

Demott died on Jan. 10 in the Mustang’s collision with a tree on Sand Canyon Road at Alamo Canyon Road.
