Letter: Men to kill men

We Americans have too easily embraced the use of drones. We acquiesce to the accidental killings of children in the name of keeping our soldiers and our children safe.

But this is not war; this is not how war is waged. If you kill someone in another country, you must use a human to do so.

Killing humans while our soldiers are well out of harm’s way is not acceptable warfare. It’s the equivalent of cheating, but the stakes for the other countries are so much higher while our troops remain in rooms pretending we’re playing a video game and killing faceless, nameless people who have no existence outside the heads-up display.

This is not reality. Reality is the war-torn battlegrounds and the dead family members on both sides. That is what war is; it’s terrible for all involved.

War with drones allows a president, any president, to no longer have to calculate an acceptable cost of American lives when weighing the factors of warfare.

We can just fly in a fleet of drones, attack, and have an American victory before it’s even time for lunch. Because that’s all that matters to us — American victory.

Our soldiers matter more, our kids matter more, and our population of fools matters more than the soldiers, children, and people of another country.

A foreign drone attack on our soil would rile us into a frenzy not seen since Sept. 11, and yet this is the reality for so many people across the world. What is their recourse for such an act of terror?

Get your head outside of this American pride. We are as bad, if not worse, than any citizen of any other country who sits complacently as our government kills thousands across the globe while staying out of harm’s way.

Not only our leaders but now even our fighters are unseen, leaving combatants in other countries no target to end the killing of their people. We are complacent to this, we allow this.
