CIF cross country: Foothill teams learn heat times

Canyon girls receive at-large bid

The CIF picked the right time to notice Canyon girls cross country.

Despite finishing fourth place in the Foothill League and just missing out on an automatic spot into Saturday’s CIF-SS prelims at Mt. San Antonio College, Canyon learned it will be making the trip after all thanks to an at-large postseason berth.

The invitation was extended to Canyon due to the team’s No. 13 rank on this week’s CIF-SS Division II poll. In order to earn an at-large nod, a team has to be ranked in the top 13 in a division at least twice in the last four weeks of the season. Two weeks ago, Canyon was 12th in the division.

“They’re excited,” said Canyon head coach Paul Broneer. “We had a workout Saturday morning. When we found out, everybody showed up. Everybody had a great workout.”

With Canyon, that makes a total of four girls teams, three boys teams and two individuals from the Foothill League headed to prelims.

The Canyon girls will race in a Division II heat at 10:21 a.m.

As for the automatic bids, Saugus and Golden Valley will race both their girls and boys teams on Saturday, as will the Hart boys and West Ranch girls.

Valencia’s Olivia Pear and Canyon’s Zach Wims will also be racing as individual qualifiers.

The Foothill champion Saugus boys (No. 4 in CIF-SS Div. II) will race at 8:43 a.m. in a Division II heat, which will be raced along with league third-place Hart.

That will be followed by the league-champion and CIF-SS Div. II No. 1-ranked Saugus girls team at 8:54. The Golden Valley girls (second in league, eighth in Div. II) will race in the same Division II heat as Saugus.

Golden Valley’s boys, also second in league, are scheduled to start at 7:45 a.m. in a Division II heat. The Grizzlies are ninth in the CIF-SS Div. II poll.

The Foothill’s third-place girls team, West Ranch, races later at 2:04 p.m. in a Division I heat in which Pear will also participate.

Wims’ Division II heat starts at 8:14 a.m.

The top four team finishers in each heat will advance to CIF finals, while individuals have to clock a top six time in their heat to move on.

Teams to qualify Saturday will come back to Mt. SAC the following Saturday for CIF championships.

Last year, the Golden Valley boys won the Division II title and the Saugus girls took second in Division II after winning CIF titles in each of the previous five years.
