On June 23, 1936, legislation was passed by Congress designating the last Sunday of September as Gold Star Mother’s Day.

This year, the federal proclamation was for Gold Star Mother’s and Gold Star Family Day on Sept.28. A Gold Star Mother (Family) is one who has lost a son or daughter in the military during time of war.

In the Santa Clarita Valley, 11 servicemen have lost their lives since Sept. 11, 2001.

“This year, we held the first Gold Star Mother’s Day Tea,” said Sharon Ventrice, co-chairwoman of the event, which was held at The Tea Gardens on Bouquet Canyon Road in Saugus.

Seven SCV Gold Star Mothers attended the event.

In attendance were Gold Star Mothers Michelle Unthank (Jake Suter), Kitty Conant (John M. Conant), Kay Slocum (Richard “Ricky” Slocum), Silvia Sellen (Dennis Sellen Jr.), Kathy Colley (Stephen Colley), Carolyn Acosta (Rudy Acosta) and Delia Gelig (Ian Gelig).

Tommie Huddleston and Ventrice co-chaired the inaugural event.

“They are the most amazing women you would ever want to meet,” said Ventrice. “We invited these amazing women to a tea in their honor and to honor their sons for their ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.”

Each mother received gifts and door prizes and enjoyed a High Tea including various teas, finger sandwiches, scones and cakes.

One of the gifts was a First Day of Issue Stamp Cover of the Gold Star Mother postage stamp dated Sept. 21, 1948, and another was an original Gold Star Mother pin dated 1 August 1947.

There was also a hankie for each woman that Huddleston had embroidered with a gold star by Linda Buesching of My Embroidery Services.

The décor included flower arrangements from Charmaine’s Bouquet Canyon Florist of Saugus, beautifully wrapped gifts in pink, lime and purple pastels by Huddleston and Ventrice and lovely, delicate tea cups used by The Tea Gardens.

“There were some tears, some laughter and shared pictures of their sons among the women and a promise from us to never forget the sacrifices of their sons,” said Ventrice.

Also in attendance were representatives of some of the sponsors and support groups; Tina House for the VFW 6885 Auxiliary, Rose Sliepka for 1st Place Awards, Chaplain Ileana Perez for the American Legion 507 Auxiliary and Connie Acevedos for Prayer Angels for the Military.

Among the sponsors of this event were: the American Legion Post 507, J. D. Kennedy, commander; the American Legion Post 507 Auxiliary, Christy Marks, president; the Santa Clarita B.P.O. Elks Lodge #2379 through Ted Olsen; Rose Sliepka of 1st Place Awards in Lancaster; Bob Kellar, mayor pro-tem of the City Council of Santa Clarita; Roy and Tina House for the VFW Post 6885 and Auxiliary; the Santa Clarita Sunrise Rotary Club, through Pierce Reibsamen ; Santa Clarita Valley Veterans Memorial Committee, through Sharon Ventrice; Fred Arnold of American Family Funding, Stevenson Ranch; J.
