Rubber soles will meet the road Sunday for the 2012 Santa Clarita Marathon.

The marathon takes off at 7 a.m. from McBean Parkway at Town Center Drive and will force some road closures, although organizers are trying to keep the runners mostly to bike trails around the city.

Included on the trail route are the South Fork and San Francisquito trails, which will be closed for the run. But several major roads and intersections will also be closed to accommodate runners, according to an event website. Some of those closures include:

-McBean Parkway from Magic Mountain Parkway to Valencia Boulevard from 5 a.m. to 7:15 a.m.

-The intersection of Magic Mountain Parkway at Tourney Road from 7 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.

-Newhall Ranch Road at Avenue Tibbitts and McBean Parkway from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

Pat Downing, the city’s arts and events supervisor, said closure times are based on the expectation that the slowest marathon runner will maintain a 15-minute mile pace.

Downing said it may be necessary to cut off runners who do not maintain that pace to ensure that roads can be opened as soon as possible.

Runners will also participate in a half-marathon, 5K race, a quarter-mile children’s race and the three-mile Mayor’s Walk.
