SAN DIEGO (AP) — Authorities say the man suspected of shooting an off-duty officer and who was killed in a gunbattle with San Diego police late Halloween night was a former firefighter facing charges of sex with a minor.

U-T San Diego reports (http://bit.ly/Y9vcvC) a detective recognized 40-year-old Philip Martin Hernandez and his 18-year-old female companion as the suspects in Monday's shooting of an off-duty Escondido police officer during a robbery at an ATM machine.

The 57-year-old officer is recovering at a hospital from a gunshot to the head.

Police say Hernandez, who was supposed to be arraigned on felony sex abuse charges in Riverside Monday, got out of his van and opened fire on officers.

Authorities say the female suspect surrendered.

Officials say the two posed as police officers and committed several robberies.
