It’s been a joyous run for Hart girls tennis over the last year.

A trip to the CIF-Southern Section Division III quarterfinals in 2011, then winning a co-Foothill League championship this season.

And how do they get rewarded?

A matchup against Southern California perennial power Chadwick of Rancho Palos Verdes in the first round of the Division II playoffs.

Nonetheless, the Indians defeated the Dolphins 10-8 on Wednesday at Hart High.

Hart (13-3) was ahead 9-3 in the matchup and ultimately received the match-clinching victory from the doubles team of Bailey Sindle and Lauren Dam to go ahead 10-5.

Hart lost the last three sets of the afternoon, so the Sindle-Dam 6-1 win over Chadwick’s Alex Nguyen-Phuc and Taylor Wolf was critical.

“I got a little nervous. Sure I did,” said Hart head coach Chris Mansfield. “I’m thankful Lauren and Bailey settled me down.”

Hart, true to form, was led by its singles side, which produced seven set wins.

Freshman Natalia Munoz was the only one who swept at 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.

The match of the day was provided early by Hart’s Jackie Resler and Chadwick’s Montana Morgan.

Resler was down 5-2 only to come all the way back and take a 6-5 lead.

Morgan then forced the match to go longer by tying her at 6-6.

Resler eventually won 7-6 (8-6),

“She’s an incredible player. She had me frustrated,” Resler said. “She was not that fun to play. But I started to realize what her weakness was. I wasn’t patient. I wasn’t moving enough. I decided to change that at 5-2.”

Resler won another set 6-0, and lost 6-2 to Alex Bauer.

Hart’s Proyfon Lohaphaisan went 1-6, 6-1, 6-0.

Sindle and Dam won two sets in doubles 6-4, 6-1, dropping another 6-1.

Chadwick (9-6) won Division III titles against Valencia in 2006 and 2007 and went to the Division II championship match in 2009.

The Dolphins finished in second place in the Prep League this year, but didn’t have the talent they had in past years.

Yet they were still tough on Hart.

“We gave it our best shot for sure,” said Chadwick head coach Carolyn Leach. “The match could have gone either way. Hart has a great team. My girls are talented. They just couldn’t pull it off today.”

Hart now gets Freeway League champion Troy in Fullerton on Friday in the second round.

Troy went to eight straight CIF championship matches from 1999 to 2006, winning in 2001, 2004 and 2005.
