Shop blossoms into local staple

Owner Charmaine Wojciechowski works on a rustic autumn arrangement at Charmaine's Bouquet Canyon Florist in Saugus on Oct. 23.

Family owned and operated, Charmaine’s Bouquet Canyon Florist has been serving Santa Clarita since 1966 — 21 years before the city was even formed.

And for Charmaine Wojciechowski, owner, operating a floral shop and delivery service runs in her blood.

“My mother was in the business for 55 years. It was originally called Charmaine’s Rambling Rose,” said Wojciechowski. “I purchased the business 32 years ago and changed the name.”

The business, with nine employees — drivers and arrangers counted among them — used to operate out of two locations; one in Canyon Country and the other in Saugus.

The Canyon Country shop was located there for about 10 years, Wojciechowski said. And the Saugus shop was there for 27 years. But, an earthquake changed that.

“We had a lot of damage,” she said. “The building separated from the wall and the landlord didn’t want to upgrade the store.”

So, Wojciechowski, with less than six months on her lease, moved both shops under one roof, expanding her Saugus store.

“We were more centrally located in Saugus,” she said.

The economic downturn was tough, she said, as customers cut back on discretionary spending. But, Wojciechowski said she “hung in there” and bent over backward to provide a level of customer service that would keep the retailer in business.

“This valley has gotten too big,” she said. “Everything has gone into the bigger chains; but, when you want service, you want to go into a place that’s friendly.”

Wojciechowski also focused on providing special crews to work wedding events — Bouquet Canyon Florist belongs to Santa Clarita Wedding and Event Professionals, a local networking group — and decorating private homes and country clubs for the holidays.

Her trained floral designers can put together an array of bouquet arrangements, she said. Compact arrangements tend to involve shorter flowers in a vase. More stylized designs usually include longer flowers.

“I have the most wonderful employees; they have been with me from five to 27 years. They’re like family,” Wojciechowski said. “We love the flower business and love coming to work. That’s a plus.”
