You and your family are invited to come and celebrate the city's 60 miles of paseos and off-street trails by participating in "Hit the Trail" with Mayor Frank Ferry and the Santa Clarita City Council.

Hit the Trail is a community bike ride, with three starting points along the city's trail system, ending in a community rally at beautiful Bridgeport Park.

When the riders reach the park they will be treated to fun, free food and giveaways. The community bike ride and rally, which are open to everyone, are slated for Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There's no cost to participate in the bike ride or the rally. Riders are simply asked to show up ready to begin riding their own bikes just prior to 10 a.m., at one of the designated starting points. (Find out where to meet up with other riders at www.santa-clarita.com/tourofca).

Activities at Bridgeport Park will include stationary bike races, a bicycle decorating contest for kids, free food from the Santa Clarita Lion's Club and much more.

In addition to being a great way to enjoy a day with your friends and family members, Hit the Trail is the official kickoff for the countdown to the 2009 Amgen Tour of California, which is returning to Santa Clarita in February.

The largest cycling event in America, the Amgen Tour of California is a Tour de France-style cycling road race that challenges the world's top professional cycling teams to compete along a demanding course.

Presented by AEG, and building upon last year's third-annual stage race, which attracted 1.6 million spectators, the 2009 Amgen Tour of California will be expanded to cover more than 750 miles over nine days from Feb. 14-22, 2009.

Santa Clarita is hosting a stage start and will welcome Lance Armstrong and the world's top cyclists Saturday, Feb. 21.

Three starting points for the Hit the Trail event have been designated throughout the city, but residents are welcome and encouraged to join the fun at Bridgeport Park whether they choose to ride or not.

Once at Bridgeport Park, participants will have the opportunity to challenge each other to a stationary bicycle race called "Cycle Showdown."

Attendees will also enjoy several community booths, with giveaways including non-profit groups raising awareness for cancer.

Santa Clarita's hometown station, KHTS AM 1220, will be on-hand emceeing all of the activities.
Participants can also sign in at the city booth at the park event for Amgen Tour of California "Spirit Points" for participating schools.

Don't miss this exciting community bike ride that helps celebrate our amazing lifestyle in Santa Clarita, as well as the upcoming Amgen Tour of California.
