Racing against wind-driven flames, Los Angeles County firefighters extinguished two small Santa Clarita Valley fires Friday.

The first blaze broke out at the Robinson Ranch Golf Course on Sand Canyon Road around 11:22 a.m., according to Los Angeles County Fire Department officials.

The fire started at the 15th hole of the course, said Inspector Tony Imbrenda. He said firefighters arrived on the golf course at 11:26 a.m. and about 100 firefighters were on the scene by 11:35 a.m.

Stephanie English, a Los Angeles County Fire Department spokeswoman, said that fire had been extinguished by 12:40 p.m.

Firefighters called “knockdown” on a second Santa Clarita Valley fire at 12:29 p.m. after it blackened about a quarter-acre of brush near the location of Thursday’s 5-acre fire, English said.

That fire erupted shortly after noon, and the Fire Department responded with a full first-alarm team, including at least one water-dropping helicopter.

The fire’s location was reported at Soledad Canyon Road and Gladding Way, the same location as Thursday’s fire that forced the evacuation of two schools and injured a firefighter.

A Sheriff’s Department official said no request was made for deputies to close down Soledad Canyon Road. The major east-west thoroughfare was shut down in both directions for about two hours Thursday due to the fire.

Causes for both fires today, as well as Thursday’s fire, were under investigation, English said.
