OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The California Highway Patrol says that it will deploy officers to help police in the crime-ridden cities of Oakland and Stockton.

Officer Sam Morgan, a CHP spokesman, said Friday that the logistics are still being worked out for the initiative called, "Operation Impact." The CHP officers could begin as early as next week.

Morgan said the CHP has already has an ongoing working partnership with the Oakland police, but will likely help more in high-crime areas.

Gov. Jerry Brown announced earlier this week that he would put CHP officers in both Oakland and Stockton as both cities have seen spikes in violent crime this year.

Stockton has had nine murders within the last week, bringing its total to 59 homicides so far this year — one more than the 58 in all of 2011.
