Dockweiler Drive extension to be studied further

Road would connect with Lyons Avenue

Over the protests of some citizens, the Santa Clarita City Council voted this week to move forward with additional study on a plan to link Dockweiler Drive with Lyons Avenue.

The council’s vote approved a $461,886 contract to conduct environmental and engineering studies necessary to submit the project to the California Public Utilities Commission for review.

The commission’s eventual determination will dictate whether the project can move forward as proposed, according to Curtis Nay, Santa Clarita’s assistant city engineer.

As proposed, the project would connect Dockweiler Drive to Lyons Avenue at Railroad Avenue. The City Council approved this version of the project as part of the city’s general plan in June 2011.

Nanette Meister, who lives in the area, criticized the plan at Tuesday’s City Council meeting and said it could negatively affect the Placerita Canyon neighborhood.

“The residents of Placerita Canyon really like things the way they are,” she said.

City staff met with the board of the Placerita Canyon Property Owners’ Association on Aug. 31 to inform members of the pending contract.

“We’re looking forward to begin meeting with all the stakeholders and working with them throughout this project,” Nay said.

Valerie Thomas, a board member for the association, criticized the cost of the project Tuesday and said she would rather see the money go toward things like road repairs or community development programs.

Nay rebutted those financial claims, and said the money that would go toward funding this project comes from bridge and thoroughfare funds, which are earmarked for transportation purposes.

“This is not money you could spend on some park or some other things we’d like to do,” Nay said.

Councilman TimBen Boydston voted against the item but said he is not committed one way or another on the final road project. He said he thought it was inappropriate for the council to act without more input from the community.

“They have every right to be heard before we sign this contract, in my opinion,” Boydston said. “It’s about the process, it’s about people being able to come to the council and be heard.”

Mayor Pro Tem Bob Kellar said that information could only come if the council gave its go-ahead to the project.

Kellar said he thought the project would go a long way toward easing some of the traffic problems in the area, and that it would be “irresponsible” to not move forward.

“Information is the name of the game,” Kellar said, “and this is the tool required by law to get the kind of specificity that we need so we can share it with the community.”
