The College of the Canyons women’s soccer team entered its Tuesday match with L.A. Valley looking to continue what has already been a stellar season for the Western State Conference, South Division defending champions.

And the second-place, undefeated Cougars didn’t disappoint, shutting out the Monarchs 8-0 at College of the Canyons.

Scoring continued to not be much of a problem for the state’s fifth most productive offense (3.0 goals per game), as COC, ranked sixth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Junior College Division III rankings, got on the board in the fifth minute and never looked back.

Saugus graduate Stacey Atwater scored three goals to lead the offensive output for the Cougars (13-0-3 overall, 7-0-2 WSC, South Division), who opened up the match with a Brittany Sayre goal just four minutes into the competition.

“It was really important for us (to score early),” Atwater said. “It was nice to get those goals and be able to defend well and keep our heads in it.”

The Monarchs (0-8-2, 0-5) struggled with the Cougars’ defense for 90 minutes, and were outshot 31-3 while posting just two shots on goal.

“Defensively, we’ve been very solid all year,” said COC head coach Justin Lundin. “We’ve given up only eight goals this season. We’re one of the best in the state for goals against (14th, allowing 0.44 goals against per game), and our defense has really picked it up.”

As a result, it was a light day for goalkeeper Francine Hernandez, who made saves on both of the Monarchs’ shots on goal to preserve the shutout.

In addition to her early goal, Sayre knocked in another in the 14th minute to give the Cougars a 4-0 lead before Atwater scored her second just under 11 minutes later.

“Today was nice for Atwater to get back to scoring some goals,” Lundin said of the freshman and Saugus High graduate. “It’s been a little bit of a drought for her putting the ball in the back of the net, and she scored three goals. So I’m excited to see moving forward how she does.”

Sabrina Serafin, Sydney Tobin and Brianna Helton each scored for COC. While Alexandra Leon, Kassandra Talamantez and Katie Colleta each picked up an assist.

The Cougars will take on Bakersfield on Friday at College of the Canyons at 4 p.m.

“It was awesome to have a lot of goals (today), and just have that feeling of ‘We’re on top. We can do this. We can win conference,’” Atwater said. “I think it gave us a push to go into the next game against Bakersfield.”
