Ken Pulskamp, shown here during the State of the City luncheon last week, will take the position of interim city manager for Burbank.

His plans of hunting, fishing and spending outdoor quality time with his family will have to wait at least half a year as Santa Clarita City Manager Ken Pulskamp takes a job in Burbank as interim city manager.

Pulskamp, who caps 25 years of service to Santa Clarita when he officially leaves his local post Nov. 30, is expected in Burbank the following Monday, he and city officials announced Monday.

On Dec. 3, Pulskamp begins a “six- to seven-month” stint helping Burbank city officials find a permanent city manager.

What if they offer the job to Ken Pulskamp permanently?

“I’m not interested in a permanent position,” he said when asked that question Monday.

Pulskamp shocked many civic leaders Aug. 27 when he tendered his resignation, saying he wanted to travel, hunt, fish and spend time with his family.

“And that’s still the case,” he said Monday. “My plans are consistent with what I said then.”

Pulskamp said he seized an opportunity that presented itself recently when Burbank civic leaders came to him for help in finding a permanent city manager, adding he’s not taking the interim job for “financial incentives.”

“I had an opportunity to help out the city of Burbank,” he said. “They wanted to know if I was interested.”
Pulskamp will also be helping city leaders draft a new fiscal year budget, he said.

The first piece of business, however, is finding a new city manager for Burbank, he said.

Michael Flad, after more than two decades building his career in Burbank, stunned civic leaders there last month when he announced he was stepping down from the city manager’s post to take the same position at South Gate. His last day is Friday.

The decision to hire Pulskamp followed weeks of closed-door meetings of the Burbank City Council, the Burbank Leader newspaper reported.

The City Council must formally approve the agreement with Pulskamp. Appointment of an interim city manager appears on an addendum to the City Council’s Tuesday meeting.

The city’s fire chief, Ray Krakowski, is expected to be appointed as acting city manager Tuesday to fill the time between Flad’s departure Friday and Pulskamp’s arrival in December.

Pulskamp came to Santa Clarita in 1988 as the assistant city manager, assuming his current position in 2002.
