Newhall School District officials are inviting the community to dinner and discussion at Wiley Canyon Elementary School on Tuesday.

The evening is open to parents and district staff, providing an opportunity for both groups to better know each other and education issues in informal, interactive setting.

“We have a comprehensive plan where we lay out the major goals for the district in the next three years, and in that plan is a whole set of demographic data,” said Newhall Superintendent Marc Winger.

“What we do over dinner is set up the tables with questions — and (the tables) report to us what the state of the district is,” he said.

Demographic data that reflects a changing district, and educational data reporting districtwide growth in state test scores, will also be shared.

“We like people to see (district data) because they make meaning of it themselves and it helps them understand the dynamic that we’re dealing with when it comes to staff development, choices, equity and fairness issues,” Winger said.

In addition to the district’s plans for technology spending, Newhall’s food-services agency will also be on hand to answer parents’ questions.

“(Parents) like to have all their questions answered about nutrition and the taste of their children’s food and whether the kids are rejecting the cafeteria food,” he said.

It’s also an opportunity for parents to ask questions of the school board, Winger said.

“It’s interactive on another level. Oftentimes, staff and parents don’t have time to interact with one another,” Winger said. “So it gives them the opportunity in a more informal setting than a board meeting and (a chance) to hear what the board members are doing.”
