Sheriff’s detectives Saturday were investigating a car-versus-pedestrian hit and run in Valencia that could be a hate crime.

A man was reportedly struck by a maroon Toyota Corolla near the intersection of Pueblo Drive and Estaban Drive in Valencia after he stepped into the street around 11:10 p.m. Friday, Lt. Bill Weiss said.

Witnesses said the collision appeared to be deliberate and reported one or more of the four men inside the car shouted gay slurs at the victim, Weiss said. Investigators were looking for the four men.

Weiss said the collision is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

A neighbor who asked to not be identified said he was walking outside to check on his dog when he heard someone shout gay slurs followed by the sound of a car accelerating.

The neighbor said he looked in the direction of the noises and saw a man tumbling on the ground while a car sped away.

“This is a great neighborhood; stuff like this never happens,” he said. “These guys just didn’t have any respect or care for him at all.”

The victim suffered moderate contusions in the incident. His name was not released.
