MODESTO (AP) — A group of Modesto bank employees are OK after a customer deposited a packet of money wrapped in a paper towel that sent six employees to a hospital, police said.

It hasn't been determined what was on the money, or the towel, but the employees at the Chase Bank branch started experiencing itching and rashes, authorities said. A hazardous material crews responded to the bank Friday afternoon.

The deposited money was sent to a state crime lab for testing, Modesto police spokesman Officer Scott Nelson said Saturday. Nelson could not say how long the testing would take.

The customer who made the deposit has been identified by police, but has not been arrested, Nelson said.

During the incident, crews set up makeshift showers in the parking lot and rinsed the employees off, said Modesto Regional Fire Authority Division Chief Sean Slamon. The employees' symptoms abated once they were removed from the bank and showered, Slamon said.

It's not known how many customers were in the bank at the time, but no customers reported any ill effects, authorities said.

A call to the bank branch seeking comment was not immediately returned.
