The city of Santa Clarita has changed the hours for some of the facilities at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex on Centre Pointe Parkway.

These changes include later openings for the city’s activities center, gymnasium and skate park.

The activities center now opens at 2 p.m. on weekdays, 10 a.m. Saturdays and is closed Sundays. The gymnasium is now open at 11 a.m. for open-play basketball Mondays through Wednesdays, and 11 a.m. for open-play volleyball Thursdays and Fridays. The gymnasium also has open-play basketball from 4-8 p.m. on Saturdays and 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sundays, with open-play volleyball following from 5:30-9 p.m. on Sundays.

The Santa Clarita Skatepark will open to the general public two hours later on Sundays. This change was made to accommodate junior skating hours at the park from 8-10 a.m. on Sundays, according to Mike Coash, a coordinator in the city recreation department.

The changes were made in order to accommodate additional programs at the complex, according to Toi Chisom, the city’s recreation superintendent. Some of those programs will be held in the morning at the complex’s activity center before the center is opened to the public.

“It may appear that there’s less hours available, but we have actually expanded our programming efforts inside the facility,” she said.

Chisom said some of the changes are a result of seasonal demand, which is typically lower in nonsummer months, though the changes were also made in part to make the complex run more efficiently and “maximize the city’s dollar.”
