Saugus has had to deal with heartbreak a couple times already this season.

It was time for the Centurions to come out on the other side of it for a change.

Coming off a narrow five-game loss to Valencia two days prior, Saugus edged Hart 3-2 with game scores 19-25, 27-25, 21-25, 25-53 and 15-9 on Thursday at Hart High School.

“I guess you’ve got to get one in the bunch,” said Saugus head coach Zach Ambrose, referring to Tuesday’s loss and an earlier 3-2 loss to West Ranch.

Hannah Nua paced the Centurions (12-11 overall, 3-4 in the Foothill League) with 20 kills and teammate Amy Buffham finished with 11 kills.

Buffham has been playing outside hitter in place of injured starter Makena Wasserman, who went down with an ankle injury three weeks ago.

Buffham has had to convert from her usual setter position and quickly learn the ropes at outside.

She and Nua are leaned on heavily for Saugus’ thin offensive unit.

But the key on Thursday, Ambrose said, was the defense.

“The girls are stepping up on defense. We just don’t have the offense to match up to Valencia, West Ranch and Hart, but we’re playing very good defense,” he said.

Hart head coach Mary Keen agreed.

“I’m going to completely give Saugus full credit and say that their defense was unbelievable,” Keen said. “They shut us down.”

Leading the effort were players like Julianna Dole, who had a team-high 23 digs and setter Ashley Guthrie, who notched 12 digs to go with 35 assists and four blocks.

Hannah Peeters also added 17 digs.

Hart (12-5, 5-2) took a step back with Thursday’s loss, falling out of a first-place tie with Valencia.

The Vikings are now the outright league leader with three matches to play, while Hart sits tied for second with West Ranch.

Kathryn Cambra tallied a career-high 21 kills for the Indians, Amy King chipped in 13 kills and setter Erin Indermill had 39 assists and two aces.
