I can’t believe the holiday season is upon us already; with decorations changing in the stores almost overnight. There are many things to do during this time of year. Every week we have the Connect SCV magazine that comes out and has great articles, fun anecdotes and local and out of town calendars of upcoming events. The season is starting now with the Harvest/Halloween events. Lombardi Ranch is offering a fun family environment with a corn maze, music, pumpkin picking and even a petting zoo. This plays into the warmth and fun of the traditional harvest festivals of the past. For the Halloween enthusiast there is always Fright Fest at Magic Mountain – which has a much different version of a maze. Be prepared to face ghouls, zombies, ghosts and all the things that go bump in the night.

Soon we will be sending out our Holiday Guides to help you find all the best deals with our local merchants. There will be three guides in all and they will publish on: November 2nd, November 22nd and December 7th. Be sure to take your copy when you go shopping this year.

I ordered some wires on eBay and they were defective. They kindly mailed me another set. The vendor’s policy states that once they send a replacement that's it. Guess what? The second set was defective as well. So, now I have 2 pairs of useless wires.

When a store like Brent's Carpet One offers a beautiful guarantee they mean it. They have been in business here for many years and remain owned and operated by the same family who started it. They have a variety of quality flooring you can choose from and right now they're offering basic carpet installation for only $99. At that price and with the beautiful guarantee, you can't go wrong. Plus, they have area rugs in stock at 50% off. I'm sure they'll "floor" you with their customer service and selection. Brent's Carpet One is on the corner of Lyons and Wiley in Newhall. Let them know I sent you.

Do you have an addictive personality?  Addictions are camouflaged in many different forms.  Drinking, drugs, smoking, sex, bulimia and anorexia are all addictions. Where do we turn when we are faced with destructive behaviors in ourselves or, heaven forbid, in one of our children?  Immediate treatment is imperative.  The 12 step meetings, in-patient facilities, out-patient facilities, mental health professionals, and going “cold turkey” are all options.  However, allow me to introduce Scott Spackey.  Scott is a California Registered Addiction Specialist, Interventionist, Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist and Life-Coach. He is passionate in his work. As a recovered addict, he incorporates his personal experience, working with hundreds of addicts as his seminars. On November 3 from 10:00 am to 2 pm, Scott will be offering a workshop for families, counselors and anyone with substance issues or bad habits and want to learn the newest, most innovative methods of taking charge of their lives. The workshop will be held at The Paseo Club at 27650 Dickson Drive in Valencia. The cost is $55.00 per adult, $85.00 per couple and $40 for anyone under 21 (food and beverage is included). Sponsor Danny Luh has generously donated 10 prepaid registrations for those who might not be able to afford the fee. www.life-mind.com

Good Morning Santa Clarita,

We’re now in the fourth quarter of 2012. Retailers make most of their money during the fourth quarter. In fact, I hear retailers talk about fourth quarter earnings and how they can make or break a business.

Business has been tough the last couple of years, there’s no doubt about it. If you look around the Santa Clarita Valley, some of the prosperous businesses we have come to know and love are no longer here. But I have to wonder, did they just give up and stop competing or has the retail landscape changed so drastically that they just shut their doors out of necessity.

There are times I have viewed business growth and competition like reading the famous children’s stories that A.A. Milne wrote about Winnie the Pooh and friends.

When trouble hits, some businesses are the epitome of Eeyore the donkey’s dark and gloomy attitude, “Oh bother.” And they tend to turn tail and run. Not even asking for help and support or looking at how they can make their business better the following year with a little preplanning.

Then there’s the relationship between Christopher Robin and Winnie the Pooh. One day as Christopher Robin and Winnie the Pooh walked through the hundred acre woods; Christopher began to share his woes with Winnie the Pooh, the Bear of Little Brain. After some pondering Winnie the Pooh shared with Christopher Robin that he was smarter than he thought, stronger than he seemed, and braver than he believed, thus bolstering his confidence to move on and achieve more in his life.

As retailers you are certainly smarter than you think, stronger than you seem, and braver than you believe. So how will you make 2013 different than 2012.

First, decide that the Eeyore’s life philosophy of “Oh Bother” is not acceptable. Second, look around the Santa Clarita Valley for added business support. You’ll find it a number of places – the SCV Chamber of Commerce, the Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corporation, and the Santa Clarita Valley Small Business Development Center to name a few.

Begin planning now for 2013. Rewrite your business plan, update it. And if you don’t have a business plan write one. Do a SWOTH analysis. What are your current business strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats? Create a new marketing plan. How best can you utilize your marketing dollars to get the word out in a tough economy?

Ask for help. As an adverting account executive, I am not just an order taker, but a skilled business consultant who can help increase your marketing capacity and business sales with a multi-marketing approach using a number of mediums to achieve success.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Here’s to a successful fourth quarter and a prosperous 2013.

ENJOY!
