A departing passenger walks toward an outbound train at the San Francisco International Airport BART station in San Francisco.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A man caught walking into the underwater rail tube between San Francisco and the East Bay has been taken into custody, and Bay Area Rapid Transit service across the tube has been restored.

BART spokesman Jim Allison said service was stopped around 6:45 p.m. Sunday when security cameras captured the man walking from the Embarcardero station in downtown San Francisco into the Transbay Tube.

Officers boarded the train from the West Oakland station into the tube, and they found the man along the tube walkway about an hour later.

Allison said the man didn't appear to have any kind of malicious intent. His motive for walking into the tube was under investigation.

Trains began running across the tube again about 1 ½ hours later.
