SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Coast Guard has launched a search off San Diego for a boat with five people aboard after receiving a call that the vessel taking on water.

Petty Officer Connie Gawrelli (guh-REHL-lee) said a person on the boat made a collect call to U.S. Customs and Border Protection around 2 p.m. Sunday, saying that the green-and-white vessel was off the Point Loma neighborhood.

Gawrelli said that no further details were relayed, and the Coast Guard can't contact those on the boat because the report came from a collect call. So the agency sent a helicopter and boat crew to the area to look for the possible boat in distress.

She said the Coast Guard also issued an urgent broadcast to mariners in the area to look out for the boat.
