As Santa Clarita residents gear up for the upcoming Halloween holiday, many local churches prep for similar festivities that offer families an alternative way to celebrate.

Churches around the SCV host their own versions of fall festivals starting Oct. 24 through Halloween, complete with trick-or-treating, carnival games and more.

Newhall Church of the Nazarene will host a fall festival on Oct. 28 from noon to 2 p.m. The event is free and will feature a chili cook-off with more than 50 chili entries, a brownie bake-off, many carnival game booths, live music and tons of prizes.

“This is a family-focused event and a chance to have a good time,” said Kathy Cannon, Family Life Pastor at Church of the Nazarene. “We really feel strongly about offering an alternative to Halloween.”

The church is also holding a Trunk-or-Treat event on Halloween night beginning at 6:30 p.m. Children are invited to attend in costume and trick or treat in the church parking lot where nearly 75 cars will be parked and theme-decorated for the event.

Newhall Church of the Nazarene is located at 23857 The Old Road.

Pre-Halloween treats

Valencia United Methodist Church will also host its 12th annual Trunk-or-Treat event on Oct. 24 from 6-7:30 p.m. The event will offer carnival games, a cakewalk, trunk-or-treating and a fun-filled “Monster Mash Mystery Maze” complete with webbed walls and bubbling bowls of mystery Halloween stew.

“This is a fun-filled night for the whole community,” said Karyn Malchus, event coordinator. “It is definitely an event you can feel safe attending.”

Malchus describes the event, which requires more than 100 volunteers to pull off, as “Halloween tailgating.” The event is free and open to the public.

Valencia United Methodist Church is located at 25718 McBean Parkway.

Circus Animals and Dunking Pastors

Real Life Church hosts “Halloween Under the Big Top” Oct. 27 from 5-8 p.m. The circus-themed event will feature games, trunk-or-treating, dance performances, an aerial and acrobatic act and a live, circus bear and tiger.

The church and food truck vendors, Corn Heaven, Lampost Pizza, Kona Ice and Chick-fil-A, will offer food and drinks, pledging to donate 10 percent of all proceeds to Carousel Ranch, a local nonprofit organization that offers equestrian therapy for disabled children.

The event brought in nearly 8,000 attendees last year and the church anticipates that many again this year.

Real Life Church is located at 23841 Newhall Ranch Road.

Fall Festival

Grace Baptist Church hosts its annual fall festival on Halloween from 6-8:30 p.m. beginning with a free concert. Other activities will include trunk-or-treating, a kids fun zone with bounce houses, games, cake walk, chili cook-off, face painting and dunk tanks where participants are welcomed to dunk the church pastors.

More than 1,000 people attended last year’s event, which has taken place for more than 20 years.

“It can be scary going from house to house if you don’t know your neighbors,” said Daniel Luther, Children’s Ministries director. “We want to offer a safe alternative for families.”

The event is open to the public and free. The church is asking for candy donations to ensure there will be enough for everyone. Each visiting family that attends will also receive a special treat.

Grace Baptist Church is located at 22833 Copperhill Drive.
