Maui Wowi Hawaiian has officially opened in Castaic, giving local residents a taste of Hawaii with its offering of smoothies and coffees.

The smoothie and coffee bar celebrated its grand opening on Saturday with hula dancers and free drinks for the 200-plus customers who stopped by.

Carmen Diligiro, co-owner with her husband Jerry, sees Maui Wowi as something special for the Santa Clarita Valley because of its healthy smoothies and authentic Kona coffee.

"People that have been to Hawaii come to our store and it's like an extended vacation," Carmen said about customers who taste Maui Wowi's coffee.

Additionally, all the products sold at the Castaic store come from Hawaii, ranging from the bagged coffees and teas to the bags of cookies and chips.

"It makes us very unique," she said.

As for the motivation to open the store, Diligiro replied, "The product itself is what really motivated us. We've been to many smoothie stores and when we tasted these smoothies, they won us over.

They are just so delicious."

Diligiro said they hope to create a community atmosphere with Maui Wowi by hosting local bands on Friday nights.

She also noted that they want to start a program in which people who drop off Hawaiian themed decorations for the store receive a free smoothie in return.

"It makes it more of a community store," she said, adding that it gives customers a chance to see more of themselves in the store.

The store will also feature a drive-through for convenience. Maui Wowi Hawaiian is located at 28050 Hasley Canyon Road, No. 102 in Castaic.
