The brother of a man killed in a single-car crash on Soledad Canyon Road last summer is scheduled to appear in court next month to face charges of both vehicular manslaughter and speeding.

Prosecutors with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office filed a misdemeanor complaint of vehicular manslaughter Tuesday against Anthony Santos Hernandez, 25, of Canyon Country, court papers show.

Prosecutors allege in their complaint that on July 10, 2012, Hernandez “did unlawfully, and without malice, kill Luis Castillo while driving a vehicle in the commission of an unlawful act, not amounting to a felony, but without gross negligence.”

Hernandez is also charged with speeding for allegedly violating a section of the California Vehicle Code.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges at Santa Clarita Courthouse Nov. 16.

He was seriously injured in the early morning crash July 10 when the compact car he was driving hit the center divider and mowed down some trees before coming to rest pinned to one of them. Investigators at the time said speeding was a factor in the crash.

Hernandez was in a coma for more than two weeks.
