If you taped that SCV events calendar to your refrigerator last week there's a couple of dates that need to be changed. The annual Celebrity Waiter Dinner to benefit the SCV Senior Center will be held on Saturday, Feb. 21. The intriguing "Night at the Coconut Grove" celebration for Soroptimist International of Greater Santa Clarita Valley has been moved to March 10, 2010.

Film Fest at The REP
I hope you managed to enjoy a portion of the fourth annual SCV Film Festival today at the Repretory East Playhouse in downtown Newhall. If you've missed out then stop by today from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. to catch the emerging talent of college and high school students. The awards ceremony will be held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight. The REP is located at 24266 Main St., Newhall. For more information visit www.scvfilmfestival.com.

VIP night at Film Fest
It was a delight to see Danielle Jacobs present her wonderful film, "Boy/Man" at Thursday's Film Festival VIP night. Danielle, daughter of The Travel Bug's Jeri Jacobs is a product of the SCV and obviously a talented filmaker! In addition proud mom Jeri and the other filmmakers attendees included Tony and Reena Newhall, city councilwoman Laurie Ender and city employees Jessica Freude and Stacie House. Kudos to Ramon Hamilton and Jennifer Fischer for bringing this wonderful festival to the SCV!

The Beast Charity Run/Walk
The weather might not have been delightful, but the second annual Beast Charity Run/Walk held Dec. 13 raised $3,400 in much-needed funds for the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry. Valencia dentist Dr. Steven K. Watanabe's sizable contribution helped to put the fundraiser over the top. The event was sponsored by Santa Clarita Runners, the SCV's local running club. The Beast steering committee consisted of Don McLean (who runs the local runners blog www.donsdiary.net), The Signal's Cary Osborne and former Signal sportswriters Bob Dickson and Craig Leener.

Blue Star Mothers and Unitarians
Blue Star Mothers of the Canyons have been chosen by Unitarian Universalists as the recipient of the Third Sunday Special Collection Jan. 18. The Blue Star Mothers will use the gift to assist with postage for their "Hearts and Hugs From Home" boxes to be mailed to the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and other places for Valentine's Day. Unitarian Universalists hold services at 10:30 a.m. each Sunday at the SCV Senior Center, 22900 Market St., in Newhall, (661) 254-7866.

Assistance League 5K Run/Walk 1K Kids Fun Run
The annual Footsteps 5K Run/Walk provides much-needed funding for Operation School Bell. You can help children in need throughout the SCV by being a race sponsor of this event, scheduled for April 19.

Contributions from sponsors help SCV students whose families are financially struggling receive new clothing, shoes and school supplies. Thanks to outstanding community support, Assistance League has provided this service to SCV children for the past 18 years. Lend a helping hand and ensure that children come to school well-dressed, with basic supplies, while feeling confident with an added boost of self-esteem. For information, call (661) 255-1991 or e-mail alsc@email.com.
