A fire inside an old rooftop air conditioner at James Foster Elementary School in Saugus caused some concern for teachers and students Tuesday morning, a sheriff’s sergeant said.

About 9:50 a.m., smoke was seen coming from the school on Pamplico Drive, said Sgt. Rich Nagler of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

No one was hurt, he said, and students left the building without incident.

“An old air conditioner on the roof caught fire,” said Nagler. “Something got in there that it didn’t like.
“The (Los Angeles County) Fire Department responded quickly and put it out.”

A spokesman for the Fire Department said firefighters were dispatched at 9:48 a.m. for “an air conditioner first reported as on fire.”

“It was somehow around the school’s library,” said the spokesman who is not permitted to give his name.

“Smoke was somehow in the building during this incident,” he said. “It later turned out to be a malfunctioning air conditioner.”

When a receptionist at the school was asked about the fire, she said: “It wasn’t a fire.”

Firefighters left the school at 10:36 a.m.
