Wienermobile visits Saugus grocery store

The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile briefly visited the Santa Clarita Valley this week, delivering novelty for young visitors and nostalgia for those who grew up with the icon.

Whether it was the 27-foot
hot-dog-shaped truck or the company’s famous way with b-o-l-o-g-n-a, a few hundred residents were drawn to the Wienermobile at the Albertsons parking lot in Saugus.

“We go all over the hot dog highways of the Southwest,” said Abraham “Abe the Ham” Luna, a member of the two-man crew that takes the conspicuous vehicle to about 100 cities each year.

Luna led a chorus of one of the meat company’s two popular commercial jingles, “Oh, I wish I were an Oscar Mayer wiener. ...”

The visit, which included a tour of the truck, was a new experience for the younger set but a trip down memory lane for their parents.

The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile was created 76 years ago as a marketing tool. It’s now built on a Chevrolet chassis that gets mileage comparable to a full-size SUV.

Its intrigue spans generations, said 37-year-old Freddy Waff, of Santa Clarita.

“I remember seeing it as a kid with my grandma, but I’d never been inside before,” Waff said. “It’s like a little cockpit in there.”

It also brought back memories for Sonia Poplawski, of Saugus, who recalled seeing the truck in the same lot on Bouquet Canyon, across the street from her house, nearly 20 years ago, when her daughter was only 3.

Her daughter wasn’t quite old enough to sing the song that time around, but all these years later, the Wienermobile still has a certain cachet.

“I just want to drive this thing,” said Marina Poplawski, 20, who joined in a chorus of the jingle Oscar Mayer wiener song with her mother and brother.

The drivers of the big hot dog on wheels didn’t serve any food, but they did hand out coupons, stickers and wiener whistles.

“It’s like a big party bus — but a hot dog version,” said 15-year-old Tyler Poplawski. “It made me hungry.”
