Two Valencia brothers were arrested Monday for a commercial burglary in Canyon Country and were being investigated for other recent burglaries in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Robert Newell, 38, and Jonathan Newell, 43, were arrested early Monday for commercial burglary and were questioned for other burglaries in Saugus and west Canyon Country.

It is believed that both men are responsible for several recent commercial burglaries, Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s officials said in a statement.

The men were arrested about 2 a.m. Monday when a deputy on patrol checking businesses in the 26400 block of Golden Valley Road saw two men seated in a vehicle that was backed into a parking space in front of a business.

The deputy stopped and questioned the two men, who were found to be in possession of U.S. currency, most of it in small bills.

Upon searching the vehicle occupied by the two brothers, the deputy found an unlocked safe, a checkbook belonging to a local business owner, more U.S. currency, a claw hammer and a laptop computer.

Deputies who arrived to help with the arrest contacted the business owner named on the checkbook recovered from inside the vehicle.

From that, they confirmed the business had just been broken into and that the owner’s safe, checkbook, and laptop computer had been stolen.

Both Newells were arrested and booked for commercial burglary.

The older brother, Jonathan Newell, was on non-revocable parole for theft-related charges, Sheriff’s Department officials said. Non-revokable parole means the parolee is not required to report to a parole agent.

The men were held at the local sheriff’s station, Sgt. Rich Nagler said.
